Verhaal:

In 10191 wordt hertog Leto I van Huis Atreides, heerser van de oceaanplaneet Caladan, door de Padishah-keizer Shaddam IV toegewezen om te dienen als leenheerser van Arrakis, een harde woestijnplaneet. Arrakis is de enige bron van melange, of "kruid", een onschatbare stof die de menselijke vitaliteit vergroot en van cruciaal belang is voor interstellaire reizen. Ze moeten het Huis Harkonnen vervangen, die zich op bevel van Shaddam uit Arrakis hebben teruggetrokken. In werkelijkheid is Shaddam van plan zijn Sardaukar-troepen te gebruiken om Huis Atreides uit te roeien en een staatsgreep te plegen zodat Huis Harkonnen de planeet kort na hun aankomst kan heroveren.
